An Interesting Walk in the Trees
For those of you who live in the central Ohio area, you may know of Blacklick Woods. You may not know about the new Canopy Walk that opened there earlier this year.
I enjoyed visiting the area recently and found a refreshing uniqueness of this small adventure.
The Canopy Walk is approximately 40 feet up into the trees, it has 72 steps to get up to it and, although not a long walk (1/8th of a mile), is comfortable and enjoying. By the way, there is an elevator for those who want to use it or for wheelchair access.
There is a wide and flat walkway all around the Canopy Walk if you just want to walk and look at the trees and birds. Bird feeders are placed around the walk to attract the birds. There are also a few different things to do on the walk if you choose. There is a netted area that is called the floating hammock, an upper observation deck, a rope bridge and a tree house.
The floating hammock is like a large bed made of cargo netting. You can walk around on it, or if it is not busy, lay down and relax a bit. It is a weird feeling to walk off solid flooring and bounce around a little on the netting.
The observation deck is another 27 steps or so up to another level. It gives a good view of the surrounding area and possibly a view of a variety of birds.
The rope bridge is two sections of a large, tightly wound rope to walk across, almost like a tightrope. A wood platform is between the two sections for a place to take a break. There is rope netting all the way up on both sides, so there is no chance of falling. It is a strange feeling making your way across since there is no flooring below you, but it is completely safe.
The tree house is a small, two-level building that has a ladder the goes up to the second floor. Up there is a net tunnel to crawl through, a wooden set of steps to work your way down and a fireman’s pole for a quicker slid down to the lower level. Of course, I had to do the fireman’s pole.
The Canopy Walk is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. April until August, and from September to March it will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Canopy Walk is completely free and makes for a unique and interesting experience.
